Stripped Movie Review

June 3, 2013 by Eric S. 1 Comment

stripped-movie reviewSynopsis: (from IMDb) Stripped unravels over the course of 24hrs as a group of best friends document their Vegas vacation. Things take a turn for the worst when they call strippers that have them travel to a remote location.

My Quick Review: As you might know, I’m actually a big fan of Found Footage Horror Movies. I know many people despise those, but for some reasons I really like the format and can tolerate most of the movies shot this way.

It’s the case with Stripped, a found footage version of Hostel meets Turistas. Except here, strangely, the horror scenes are the weakest and I did enjoy the long 40mn intro/character’s building.

It is indeed very rare for me to immediately like/empathize with the future victims  but there is something about this group of people going to Las Vegas for their friend’s 21st birthday that just feels right. Perhaps it is the chemistry between the actors or the charisma of Alvaro Orlando (from VH1’s Pick Up Artist) but by the time shit is hitting the fan, I’m actually caring for them.

Unfortunately, as soon as the carnage happens, I lost interest. We lose the strict found footage POV and the torture scenes are lacking gore and shocks. It feels like the director did not know how to shoot those scenes now that the camera was back in his hands, and, while trying to make the mad doctor scary, it just fails miserably to create any sense of tension.

For those reasons I can’t recommend this movie to casual horror fans or people who dislike Found footage movies. Only the fans of this style of movie might appreciate spending time with this cast of characters.

The Gerber Syndrome Review

May 27, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

the gerber syndrome reviewYear: 2011

Director: Maxi Dejoie

Synopsis: A TV crew is making a documentary about The Gerber’s Syndrome, a contagious viral disease that is extremely contagious, fast spreading, and deadly.

My Short Review: Many people are fed up with the found footage genre and rightly so if they watch movies like The Gerber Syndrome.

Unfortunately, it’s not so much the format that is to blame here rather than the total lack of creative ideas and basic knowledge of the topic being depicted (a deadly virus that is quickly spreading). See, what bothered me the most was not the acting (it was OK), neither was it the very low budget but the fact that nobody seemed to really panic when being confronted to infected people.

I was living in China when there was an outbreak of SARS and thousands of people got infected and hundreds died as a result. Whole disctricts were quarantined in Beijing. And SARS was nowhere as dangerous or lethal than this Gerber Syndrome. But for some reason in this movie everybody seems OK to be around infected people without a mask (all of the scenes in the house with the family and daughter are just ridiculous that way). Back in the SARS days, almost everybody was walking in the streets with masks (in Gerber Syndrome, people just roam around face-free while being interviewed and saying this is terrible, dangerous….). If this was to happen in Europe there would be mass panic and extreme measures would be taken by the government, not just this fake CS bullsh*t.

I’m all for movies that stretched reality but frankly speaking when you have nothing else to offer to viewers, at least make some efforts to look authentic (it is supposed to be a documentary after all).

The Devil Inside Review

May 12, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

The-Devil-Inside-reviewYear: 2012

Director: William Brent Bell

Summary: (from IMDb) In Italy, a woman becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism.

My Short Review: When it first came out in theaters, The Devil Inside received a lot of bad press and critical backlash. I usually do not pay much attention to reviews and prefer to make my own opinion of a movie before actually starting to read what other people think of a film.

But somehow, those negative ratings kind of pushed The Devil Inside on the bottom of my watch-list. Until 2 days ago, when I find it to be on a TOP 10 of 2012 Horror movies List. Then, of course I had to see it.

And I have to admit, while I do not regret my decision, I can only add to the negative reviews that this movie received.

The Devil Inside is another found-footage movie with exorcism and demons at the center of the plot. The problem is that, apart from one exorcism scene that is well made, and a couple of classic jump scares (involving a dog and some loud noises), the movie is just plain boring.

On top of that I really could not get past the fact that suddenly everybody in Italy can speak very good english, including priests, cops, nurses…… If you set your movie in Italy, at least do some efforts and have most of the characters talk in Italian.

And the end….well, I can definitively understand why most of the audiences who watched The Devil Inside were booing and throwing stuff at screens. Just when everything started to be exciting, the movie ends abruptly and tells us to go check a website to know more… WTF??!!

It reminded me of the end of Blair Witch when the movie would also end during a high tension scene, but somehow it was way more effective back then and kinda served the story. Not really the case here.

My Rating: 4/10.

Paranormal Activity 4 Review

May 10, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

paranormal-activity-4-reviewYear:2012

Directed by: Henry Joost + Ariel Schulman

Summary: It has been five years since the disappearance of Katie and Hunter, and a suburban family witnesses strange events in their neighborhood when a woman and a mysterious child move in.  (from IMDb)

Neoli’s Review: Rotten Tomatoes gives a disappointing score of 4.3 out of 10 to Paranormal Activity 4, but that doesn’t mean you should keep away from it.  It’s actually good, at least for me.  Remember that the film is part of an ongoing series (Part 5 will reportedly come out in October 2013), so the best we can do is just go along for the ride and enjoy the new thrills and scares they have for us.

Paranormal Activity 4 introduces us to Alex and her rich family—her dad, mom, little brother Wyatt, Ben, the occasional houseguest/budding boyfriend/and techie responsible for setting up the various webcams all over the house, and the weird kid from across the street, Robbie.

The suburban setting is important; not only does it explain away the ubiquity of laptops and Xbox Kinect, but it also emphasizes the strained relationship of the parents—they live in such a big, beautifully furnished house yet it’s all just a façade.  Even more, since they live in the wealthy suburbs, the film’s (and the entire franchise’s) root source of horror—witchcraft—becomes even more irreconcilable.  As if to say, YES, in this day and age, and in such reassuring ritzy surroundings, such a thing still exists.

The nice thing is that the filmmakers have managed to make the found footage style in Paranormal Activity 4 as refreshing as ever.  Adding to our endless wait for something to happen in front of the camera is the Xbox Kinect, which fills the room (and our view) with countless pixels from which to detect the slightest aberration—a moving entity, a figure materializing out of thin air.  The very image of Alex and the two boys engulfed in green dots is creepy already.

As always, there’s the ongoing problem of why people would videotape just about anything, as if for the convenience of the film, and here, the Dad immediately makes a statement/disclaimer—teenagers are always documenting everything.  Of course, it helps that the actors are convincing.  Kathryn Newton, as Alex, the virginal teenage daughter bent on uncovering what exactly makes Robbie so weird, is lovely and effective.  So are Ben, and the parents, and more importantly the kids.

Little kids acting weird, specifically, weird little kid influencing his little kid friend, has always been classic fodder for horror films because kids are supposed to be faultless and harmless.  In Part 4, the theme is doubly scary because the parents are oblivious and don’t seem to care, while Alex and Ben are practically helpless in convincing them.

In the end, once the transformation is complete, Wyatt will not budge, believes he is someone else’s kid, and leads Alex to her eventual downfall.

It’s a twist ending that comes out of nowhere, which you may or may not like.  But since I’ve been rooting for the sweet-faced Alex and all her sisterly efforts since Day 1, the effect is all the more jarring.

Eric’s Review: I have to disagree with Neoli here. For me, Paranormal Activity 4 is, by far, the worst of the series. Apart from the X-Box scenes there is absolutely nothing new or inventive on display. It was actually the first time that I genuinely felt bored watching a Paranormal Activity Movie. This is the kind of lazy script that gives found-footage movie haters reason to despise the genre.

And the worst thing for me is that there are close to none scary scenes or even jump scares. Big disappointment coming from the directors who brought us Paranormal Activity 3 which, as far as I am concerned, was the best of the 4 movies so far.

Neoli’s Rating: 7.5/10

Support The Night Visitor on Kickstarter

May 5, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

the night visitor movie posterThe Night Visitor is “A sci-fi/horror film about a couple trying to save their marriage and protect their son from a terrifying unseen supernatural entity” shot using the popular found-footage style.

I’m a big fan of the genre with movies such as Paranormal Activity, Rec, Grave Encounters and of course The Blair Witch Project. Unfortunately, It is also a genre that has been overdone in recent years.

But producers Mark Gantt, Brianne Davis and Jennifer Blanc-Biehn (who also directs the movie) are promising to bring something different and unique to the genre.

I, for one am totally looking forward to seeing the end product but to do so, Mark, Brian and Jennifer need our help to be able to finish post-production on the movie and do some marketing. This is why they started a Kickstarter project.

So if you are a fan of found-footage movie and would like to help this passionate team bring the best product they can to a large audience, go and back The Night Visitor here.
