Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) Review

September 18, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

insidious chapter 2 reviewSynopsis: The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.

Guest Review (Mel): I have been waiting for this movie since I saw the first Insidious. Once again I was greatly entertained with James Wan and Leigh Whannell who I fell in love with after the first Saw. I remember the first Insidious. I really enjoyed it. I loved the creep factor it exuded.

I recently saw The Conjuring another James Wan film.  It had a certain feel about it, the eerie effects he uses and the music give his movies a certain feel. It’s almost like a trademark now.

Insidious: Chapter 2 did not disappoint. I loved that the movie picked up hours after the first one left off. It had the same core characters as last time. Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey and Leigh Whannel all return back to the big screen for a whole new set of scares. I loved the continuity of the movie. Most horror sequels just regurgitate the same thing with new characters. Insidious: Chapter 2 is a true sequel.

With out giving too much away, I will say I enjoyed it. I was wondering where they would go considering from the last Insidious we knew Josh (Wilson)  was possessed. The family moves on but it’s like the whole cycle starts over. Specs (Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) tracks down medium Carl (Coulter) who comes into the home to track down Elise on the other side. So they can find out who it was that murdered her.  The movie filled in back stories. While digging they find out what happened to Elise and what the deal is with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his connections with these dark entities surrounding him and his family.

As I was saying, watching Insidious Chapter 2,  you will know it’s a James Wan film. It was a fun ride. I would highly recommend it, especially if you enjoyed the first one.

This is The End (2013) Review

September 17, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

This-Is-The-End-reviewSynopsis: (from IMDb) While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.

My Quick Review: OK, This is The End is not your typical Horror Movie and some might frown upon having this film on a Horror Movies Blog.

With that being said, there is no denial that there are a few elements of horror in This is the End, and after all, I already reviewed A Haunted House so why not another mainstream Horror Comedy to the list.

This is the end is a buddy/movie or should I say buddies, reuniting most of the cast of Pineapple Express. Those actors are friends and it shows. Most of the dialogue is classic Judd Appatow/Seth Rogen stuff, so expect very crude language and a lot of swearing.

What makes This is The end belong into the Horror Comedy genre are the few violent gory deaths and the demons apparitions. The special effects are well done and there are a couple of efficient jump scares as well.

There are of course many cameos in this movie but if there is one everybody will remember it is Michael Cera’s. He plays such an obnoxious d***head that you almost wonder if he is like that in real life (probably not). Watch out for Channing Tatum as well, who is not afraid to play against character!!

As a horror comedy This is The End works well but if you’re not a fan of James Franco or Seth Rogen and hated Pineapple Express or Superbad, then this movie won’t be for you (unless you like to see a lot of demon cock).

My Rating: 7/10

Kuntilanak (2006) Review

August 29, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

Kuntilanak ReviewSynopsis: A young college student moves to a new boarding house in a very haunted area. Rumours had it that a Kuntilanak (the she-demon) lived up in a hundreds of years old tree near the house. Soon, people around her died one by one tragically….

My Quick Review: Kuntilanak, based on a local urban legend, is a very popular horror franchise in Indonesia. The always gorgeous Julie Estelle (Macabre) stars as Sam, the young college student with a “gift” for the occult, and Rizal Mantovani directs, as he will for all subsequent sequel.

Kuntilanak is a very creepy movie with quite a few “jump out of your seat” moments. Each and every appearance by the Kuntilanak has managed to raise some hair on the back of my skin. It’s interesting that I did watch The Conjuring the night before at the theatre and was not as easily scared as I was when watching this film (The Conjuring is definitively the better movie but not the scarier).

The whole visual art of the movie adds to the spooky feeling and the haunted boardhouse is nicely shot as well. The acting, while not stellar is above average and there is plenty of eye candy from the cast (Julie Estelle and Ratu Felisha in particular). The gore is low key and while not entirely original, Kuntilanak is one of the Best Indonesian Horror movie I’ve seen so far.

My Rating: 6.5/10

The Conjuring (2013) Review

August 28, 2013 by Eric S. 1 Comment

the conjuring reviewSynopsis: (from IMDb) Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

My Quick Review: I have to admit I wasn’t as impressed by The Conjuring as most of my fellow reviewers/critics.

Is it an efficient horror movie that provides a few scares and thrills? Most certainly so. Is there anything original about the proceedings? Unfortunately not.

Of course I did enjoy the 70’s settings and how James Wan is paying homage to some of the biggest classics from this period (The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror come to mind of course). He is crafty enough to give it a modernized style inspired by Asian Horror Cinema.

Therefore, the movie relies on tense build-ups, rare ghost/demon sightings and convincing performances to provide the goods, and you will find yourself looking for things in the dark more than once. But this is where the main problem lies. By not wanting to show us much,  the scares are few and far between.

James Wan is improving as a movie director with each of his movie and the Conjuring is probably his best-made film so far. Unfortunately it’s not the scariest (Insidious was) or the most horrific (Saw). It’s an extremely decent hollywood horror movie but for horror fans there is something lacking.

My Rating: 6.5/10

V/H/S/2 Review

June 9, 2013 by Eric S. 2 Comments

vhs 2 reviewSynopsis (from IMDb) : Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student’s disappearance.

My Review: After a stretch of really bad movies, it seems I’m on a roll again. Following Resolution (go and watch it already!) yesterday, V/H/S 2 is another horror gem that I can only recommend (and a big improvement on the first movie).

I did enjoy the first V/H/S but it was also a flawed movie with some weak segments. V/H/S 2 only has one average segment IMO (the last one) but all the others range from good to great while featuring horror movie classic genres such as Ghosts, Demons, Zombies and Aliens.

It’s quite difficult to be original when doing found footage movies but this time all the directors put their own twist to it and it is refreshing.

We start with Clinical Trials, from Adam Wingard (V/H/S, You’re Next, ABCs of Death). The pitch is similar to the movie The Eye, where our main protagonist is starting to see ghosts right after an eye operation (he conveninently has a camera in his eye, allowing us to see the movie POV style). I did jump couple of times (when the ghosts appear) and the tension is good enough to sustain the whole duration of the short. I would compare Clinical Trials to an Asian Ghost Movie on speed. Highly satisfying beginning!!

Rating: 7/10

The second segment, A Ride in The Park, from directors/writer Eduardo Sanchez, Jamie Nash and Gregg Hale (Blair Witch Project, Lovely Molly) is a take on the zombie genre. The twist is that the camera is on the zombie’s head (similar to Ben Wheatley’s segment in ABC’s of Death) so we have a few gory shots of him  feeding on his victims. This is a fast paced short that will satisfy zombie and gore fans alike.

Rating: 6/10

The third Segment, Safe Heaven, from directors Gareth Evans (The raid) and Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre, The ABCs of Death) is, by far, my favorite. It starts pretty slow with a team of journalists investigating a cult (with the help of hidden cameras on their bodies) but when the shit starts hitting the fan, I was almost jumping up and down out my seat from pure joy and adrenaline. The pace and action is reminiscent of The Raid and the weirdness and gore is on par with Macabre and the L segment from ABC’s of Death. With Safe Heaven, Gareth and Timo prove that teaming them up was a match made in heaven or in this case, hell.

Rating: 8/10

The last segment, Alien Abduction Slumber Party, from writer/director Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun, The ABCs of Death), is the weakest of the bunch for me. I did not really care for the use of a dog as a tripod and, despite some neat sound effects, could not get emotionally attached to the story, the same way I was with Clinical Trials. As a result, all scares or sense of tension disappeared quickly.

Rating: 5/10

The wrap around segment, Tape 49, written and directed by Simon Barrett did an OK job of transitioning us into each stories and had its moments at the end. An improvement over the wrap around segment of the first V/H/S but nothing to write home about.

Rating: 6/10

V/H/S 2 belongs to the short list of horror sequels that are actually better than the original. I truly believe that the Found Footage genre is better served by short stories as shown here. It allows many different creative directors to test the medium and each stoy does not need to drag into overly long introductory segments that plague many of the found footage movies out there.

Now waiting for V/H/S 3. Bring it on!!

My Rating: 7.5/10
