Grabbers (2012) Review

November 18, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

grabbers reviewSynopsis: When an island off the coast of Ireland is invaded by bloodsucking aliens, the heroes discover that getting drunk is the only way to survive.

Quick Review: The british have become masters of horror comedy in recent years, especially since the success of Shawn of The Dead. Grabbers the most recent entry in the genre.

I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by the  quite serious tone taken by the events and, especially in the first half, there is a very good balance between genuine scares and humor. It’s a pity that once everybody starts drinking and a romance is developing between our two main characters, the plot is losing steam.

As a result, Grabbers never quite manages to elevate its promising material to more than b-movie type fare. What could have been another horror comedy classic is barely able to keep your interest level high enough, unless your alcohol level is closed to the one of its own heroes.

My Rating: 5/10

Make me Shudder (2013) Review

October 8, 2013 by Eric S. 3 Comments

Make Me Shudder reviewOriginal Title: Mor Hok Tub Ha (มอ6/5 ปากหมา ท้าผี)

Synopsis: (from EnjoyThaiMovies) A group of Grade 12 students break into an abandoned building believed to be haunted by a student who killed himself over bad grades and also a teacher who was murdered. The students decide to challenge the ghosts by teasing and irritating them.

My Quick Review: As a new entry in the popular Thai Horror Comedy style, and being directed by Poj Arnon, the man behind the popular Hor Taew Tak movies, I was expecting to spend a good time in my local theater yesterday.

Unfortunately Make me Shudder did not bring me one laugh and/or scare for its whole duration. I was actually so bored, I happen to look at my watch more than once.

The movie feels cheap (there is mainly one location used during the entire time), whole scenes are stretched ad nauseam, and after 20mn I was fed up to hear the main characters fake shouting/moaning all the time.

I’m sorry to say that make Me Shudder does not bring anything new to the table and is just trying to surf on the success of Pee Mak, the king of Thai Horror Comedy. Unfortunately, a tired formulaic script, bad sense of timing the scares, and poor cheap 3D effects do not make for an enjoyable experience. To avoid at all cost.

My Rating: 3/10

This is The End (2013) Review

September 17, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

This-Is-The-End-reviewSynopsis: (from IMDb) While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.

My Quick Review: OK, This is The End is not your typical Horror Movie and some might frown upon having this film on a Horror Movies Blog.

With that being said, there is no denial that there are a few elements of horror in This is the End, and after all, I already reviewed A Haunted House so why not another mainstream Horror Comedy to the list.

This is the end is a buddy/movie or should I say buddies, reuniting most of the cast of Pineapple Express. Those actors are friends and it shows. Most of the dialogue is classic Judd Appatow/Seth Rogen stuff, so expect very crude language and a lot of swearing.

What makes This is The end belong into the Horror Comedy genre are the few violent gory deaths and the demons apparitions. The special effects are well done and there are a couple of efficient jump scares as well.

There are of course many cameos in this movie but if there is one everybody will remember it is Michael Cera’s. He plays such an obnoxious d***head that you almost wonder if he is like that in real life (probably not). Watch out for Channing Tatum as well, who is not afraid to play against character!!

As a horror comedy This is The End works well but if you’re not a fan of James Franco or Seth Rogen and hated Pineapple Express or Superbad, then this movie won’t be for you (unless you like to see a lot of demon cock).

My Rating: 7/10

Director:  Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen

Origin: US

Pee Mak Phrakanong Review

August 6, 2013 by Eric S. 4 Comments

pee mak phrakanong reviewSynopsis: Mak served in the war during the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty. At war he became friends with Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey, whose lives he saved. Once the war was over, Mak invited his four friends into his home in Phra Khanong town and introduced them to his beautiful wife Nak and his newborn baby boy Dang. But A rumor is going around in the village that Nak had died giving birth to her stillborn baby, Dang  and lingered as haunting ghosts .

My Quick Review: From famed director Banjong Pisanthanakun (Alone, Shutter) Pee Mak is the first film that I have watched in 4D. I have to say that past the first minutes of surprise when your seat is moving and you receive small splash of water in your face, it is really gimmicky and brings nothing to the movie (it’s actually quite distracting).

Nevertheless, I had a blast. Pee Mak is the Highest Grossing Thai Movie of all time and when walking in the streets of Bangkok, you  can’t miss all the billboards full of advertisement starring the actors of the movie.

For fans of asian horror comedies with a touch of romance, Pee Mak brings a sense of nostalgia and evokes the golden days of HK ghost movies such as “A Chinese Ghost Story”. There are brillant comeedy scenes (mostly physical but also plenty of wordplay jokes that might be a bit difficult to catch if you don’t understand Thai).

But don’t fret, you do not need to be familiar with the Thai culture or language to get all the jokes and laugh at the situations and the awesomess of the main characters. It does help that there is a very strong chemistry between all of them, already estabished in the best segments of 4Bia and Phobia 2.

If there is one reproach we can make towards Pee Mak, is that there is not much in terms of scares and the movie definitively pushes towards a full out comedy/parody. So if you are looking for another Thai Scary movie, you will be disappointed, but if you just want to spedn a good time at the movies, you will have a blast watching Pee Mak again and again.

My Rating: 8/10

Director: Banjong Pisanthanakun

Origin: Thailand

100 Bloody Acres (2012) Review

July 13, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

100 Bloody Acres reviewSynopsis: (from IMDb) Reg and Lindsay run an organic fertiliser business. They need a fresh supply of their “secret ingredient” to process through the meat grinder. Reg comes across two guys and a girl with a broken-down vehicle on their way to a music festival.

My Quick Review: 100 Bloody acres follows the steps of recent redneck horror comedies such as “Tucker and Dale vs Evil” and balances shock moments with crassy humor pretty well.

What could have been another “texas Chainsaw” copycat (with laughs) turns out to be a better movie than expected, thanks in particular to a strong cast led by Damon Herriman ( Justified) who plays  Reg, the dumber of the two brothers, but also the one with a conscience.

The characters are particularly well written and could have found their own place in a Coen Brothers movie and some situations are unexpected and very hilarious (including a  scene with an older woman that is probably the most shocking moment in the entire movie).

What prevent 100 Bloody acres to become an Indie classic are mainly pacing problems (I found myself looking at the watch sometimes) and a lack of visual flair/style.  With that being said, I still have to recommend it to fans of Horror comedies.

My Rating: 6/10

Director: Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes

Origin: Australia
