Short of the Week: Luna

Synopsis: A young girl who witnesses the brutal slaying of her family at the hands of a mysterious killer is trapped alone in her house and must now try to survive before the murderer finds her.

Quick Review: Expect the unexpected in Writer/Director Antonio Perez’s short film Luna. This is a great short that manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for its whole 10mn duration. Who is this killer? Why is he after this family? Quite soon we realize something’s wrong and this is what makes Luna so special. Technically it’s just perfect. Beautifully shot, you can feel the tension and director Perez even manages to squeeze in a couple of jump scares.

Luna got the “Best Short film” award at the last ScreamFest and rightfully so. It’s a promising effort from Antonio Lopez career and I, for one, can’t wait for his first full feature.

Short of the Week: Shhh…

“Shhh” is a tale about a young boy, who uses his imagination to overcome his monstrous bully at night. Tired of being scared, Guillermo eventually takes matters into his own hands. Inspired by the lucid dreams of director Guillermo del Toro during childhood.

After viewing the film, Director Guillermo del Toro described Shhh as having “strong visuals and solid atmosphere.”

This short was featured in many film festivals , including winning:

Best Short and Production Design at the 2013 Leo Awards in Canada

Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Short at the 2012 Rhode Island International Film Festival in the U.S.

Best Short Film at the 2012 Festival Internacional de Cine Puebla in Mexico

I did enjoy Shhh… tremendously and feels indeed there is a strong homage to Guillermo Del Toro’s work, especially Pan’s Labyrinth. Production design is of the highest quality for a short film. Enjoy it below!

Short of the Week: “2 AM”

I somehow missed this awesome short a few months back. The film is based off a terrifying Reddit post titled “The Smiling Man,” . The short, directed by Michael Evans, is well made and down right creepy as hell. Enjoy, I know I did.

Short of the Week: Insomnia

Director: Nino Scuderi

Synopsis: The descent into madness from a man suffering insomnia.

Quick Review: Insomnia got me jumping right at the beginning thanks to smart editing and great sound effects. This is a short to watch with headphones if you want to appreciate it to its full potential.

It’s a great testimonial on the difficulties of Insomnia and some clues might tell us there is some grief involved as well. if I have one reproach, it is the length. I believe Insomnia could have more impact with an extra 2 mn cut.
