Gallowwalkers (2012) Review

August 3, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

GallowWalkers reviewSynopsis: (from IMDb) A cursed gunman (Snipes) whose victims come back from the dead recruits a young warrior to help in the fight against a gang of zombies.

My (very) Quick Review: I can’t believe Gallowwalkers reportedly cost 12 millions USD to produce. What I can believe though is that it was shelved for 7 years before release.

GallowWalkers sells itself as a Zombie-Western with Wesley Snipes kicking deadies asses. In reality, Wesley Snipes does not do much apart from giving long serious glares and do “cool” poses.

This film could have been the start of a new franchise (the pitch sounded exciting) but it will further diminish whatever credit Wesley Snipes had left with movie fans.

Bad editing, worse acting, ridiculous wardrobe choices (that tries too hard to look cool), GallowWalkers is a big budget indie disaster. It’s one thing to want to try to mix genre and pay homage to classic Sergio Leone’s movies, it’s another thing to be able to pull it off.

My Rating: 4/10

Art of the Devil II (2005) Review

August 1, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

Art of the devil 2 Long Khong reviewOriginal Title: ลองของ (Long Khong)

Synopsis: A group of high school friends reunite after two years when one of their fathers’ committed suicide. They all spend the night at their friend’s place. When darkness falls, strange things begin to happen to them one by one. It is as if someone is using the black arts on them in revenge for an act this group of friends committed together back in high school.

My Quick Review: Long Khong’s english name is misleading as there is absolutely no connection with the first Art of The Devil. Western distributors just named the movie Art of the Devil 2 as it does share common use of Thai Black Magic.

Art of the Devil II is a much more graphic movie than the first one and actually ends with one of the hardest to watch torture scene ever put on film (there are some similarities with Audition since we have the pretty girl inflicting pain here as well).

It is a pity then that the script is completely uninteresting and quite confusing in its plot lines.

What could have indeed been a Torture Porn classic ends up short of greatness because the gory/creepy scenes are surrounded by bland storytelling and poorly defined characters.

My Rating: 4.5/10 (5.5/10 for torture lovers).

Absence (2013) Review

July 30, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

absence reviewSynopsis: Doctors are baffled when an expectant mother wakes to find her nearly-to-term pregnancy apparently disappear overnight. Police investigate the situation as a missing child, and only her husband and brother trust her version of events.

My Quick Review: I don’t have much to say about Absence except for: “Please stop releasing found footage movies as an excuse for a lackluster script and lack of budget“.

I have always been defending the POV style horror genre because I believe, when properly done, it can generates some of the best scares seen on screen. Unfortunately, too many directors rely on the gimmick to cut budget and expand a script that would be best suited for a short.

This is the exact case here with Absence. Would that movie have been part of an anthology, I would have possibly rated it higher (there are 2-3 decent scenes and the acting is not too rough). As it is, Absence is a borefest.

The characters are uninteresting (especially the brother who is borderline misogynist and obnoxious), and worse, the whole film is scare-free.

The fact that we can quickly guess what happened to the baby just adds insult to injury when we are being shown one “kidnapper” during the end credits (did the writers/director believe we would be shocked by this big reveal?).

My Rating: 3/10

Invitation Only (2009) Review

July 29, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

invitation-only-reviewOriginal Title: Jue ming pai dui

Synopsis: Five people arrive at a party, fully unaware that the special night is just a cover for an evening of torture and murder.

My Quick Review: I remember when  Invitation Only was released in Asia a couple of years back, everybody was talking about the presence of Maria ozawa (one the most famous japanese porn star) in the casting. Many went to see the movie in the hope to see her naked (and rest assured, she is) while other (mostly women) complained that she wasn’t a good actress and not even good looking enough to play a model.

I had forgotten about all of this controversy when I started watching Invitation Only and it just came back to me when I first saw Maria Ozawa on screen.

But enough with the gossip. Is Invitation Only a good horror movie?

Unfortunately, not really. The script takes its inspiration from other torture porn movies such as Hostel (rich bored guys get their ultimate thrills by torturing/killing people) but never rises above its source material. The acting is pretty bad across the board and I was starting to be really bored past half point of the movie.

If you’re into gore though you’re in for a treat, Invitation Only never shies away from the grossy stuff. But apart from a few torture/kill scenes there is nothing noteworthy in Invitation Only (unless you’re a die-hard fan of Maria Ozawa ;-)).

My Rating: 4/10

Evidence (2013) Review

July 25, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

EVIDENCE reviewSynopsis: A detective hunts down a killer using video footage shot by the victims of a massacre at an abandoned gas station.

My Review: I was not a fan of The Fourth Kind, director Olatunde Osunsanmi’s previous effort, and, while I liked Evidence better, there are still many problems plaguing this found-footage movie.

First of all, it’s hard to care when all of the characters dying on screen or potentially in danger are just walking Las Vegas cliches (a dancer, an apprentice magician, wannabe actress, an addict with a big bag of cash and so on….)  with no depth at all.

And let’s not even talk about the cops whose investigation does not come close to any kind of legitimate real world police work.

Finally you have a killer with no apparent motive, killing people in the middle of nowhere while everybody (including the killer) keeps on shooting videos.

I have to admit that, for the last complain, most will make more sense by the end of the movie. And I am one of the few who actually did enjoy the final twist and  reveal (not too tough to spot, considering the many obvious red herrings the script is throwing at us).

Evidence did not leave such a bad impression on me after all and it is a step in the right direction for director Olatunde Osunsanmi. If you’re a fan of found footage movies you might want to check this movie out. For the others, maybe not…

By The way, there is another movie called Evidence from 2012 and it is a found footage movie as well. It is also a much better movie than this one.
