Omnivoros (2013) Review

December 23, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

omnivoros reviewSynopsis: Marcos Vela is a prestigious gastronomic journalist who accepts the request of an independent publisher to write an article on the recent emergence of the Clandestine Restaurants. What started as a usual journalistic investigation, will turn into a terrible nightmare where no one is who seems to be and which will end in a surprising and unexpected ending.

My Quick Review: For some reason, I’m not a big fan of movies depicting cannibalism. But the 5mn introduction of Omnivoros just changed my mind.

The scene involving a young Dimos with his dying mon is disturbing in so many ways that I knew I would be in for a wild ride (and enjoying myself along the way).

Unfortunately, the rest of the movie never really holds up to this promising start.

Omnivoros beneficiates from an interesting backgorund story, the clandestine restaurants, where forbidden/dangerous meals are being eaten and I would have loved to see this story developed a bit more. We also never really know what bring this group of people to enjoy human meat (except for the host) and for those reasons, together with a messy script, Omnivoros never really manages to elevate its material.

Another weakness of the movie lies within its actors. Most of the acting feels wooden and nobody seems to have more than one expression on their faces. There are some eye candy for boobs lover but nothing impressive in terms of performance.

Omnivoros has a strong opening and an interesting conclusion, but everything else in between would have beneficiated from more polishing.

My Rating: 6/10

The Uninvited Guest (2004) Review

September 28, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

the uninvited guest reviewOriginal Title: “El Habitante Incierto”

Synopsis: (from IMDb) What if … you let a stranger into your house to use your phone, but while you’ve been patiently waiting in the kitchen, he just disappears … or does he?

My Quick Review: What a weird movie. The uninvited Guest can’t really be classified as a “horror movie” in the traditional sense of the term.

With that being said, the nightmarish state in which the main character spends the whole movie, and the very dark ending could justify it.

The uninvited Guest is a minimalist movie that takes full advantage of its settings and is brilliantly directed by Guillem Morales. Thanks to  smart editing and voyeuristic shots, the young spanish director manages to put us into Felix’s shoes while he is slowly losing his mind.

Our hero is a very flawed man and, at times, it’s even difficult to root for him. After all he is very weak, child-like and can’t manage to face his fears/demons straight ahead. Because of those flaws, there can’t be a happy ending for him.

My Rating: 6/10

Atrocious Review

June 15, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

atrocious reviewSynopsis: Two teenage siblings endure a terrifying experience while investigating a rural legend near their family’s vacation home.

My Short Review:  Atrocious is another movie surfing on the success of found footage movies such as Blair Witch, Rec or Paranormal Activity. Blair Witch especially comes to mind when most of the proceedings in Atrocious are being shot at night in a creepy forest.

Nothing surprising here and the script is as thin as cigarette paper. In the hands of a more capable director, Atrocious could have risen to a very respectable entertainment. In the hands of Fernando Barreda Luna though, it’s a different story.

To make a good genre film, the viewer must be maintained in a growing sense of tension that will keep him to the edge of its seat until the final credits. He must as well feel emotionally involved with the characters and their misadventures.  To do this, you need two things: a suffocating cinematography spreading doubt and fear, and talented actors to make every emotional step credible.

Unfortunately, in Atrocious none of that is present on the screen. The actors are not conveying any sense of fear and emotion while the cinematography is just bland.
The result is a genre film clearly built to cash in on a lucrative trend. A Movie with a total lack of originality or genuine scares.

My Rating: 4/10

La habitación del niño Review

April 17, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

la habitacion del nino reviewYear: 2006

Director: Alex de la Iglesia

Summary: A young couple and a baby moved into their new home, an old house that they decide to renovate. Soon, a stange man will appear at night. Is the house haunted or a doorway to another universe?

My (very) Short Review: La Habitacion del nino is another movie of the Spanish Anthology “Films to keep you awake” and is directed by Alex de la Iglesia, a very prolific director who tried his hands in a lot of genres such as western (800 bullets), horror (accion mutante) or thriller (the perfect crime).

The story revolves around a young couple that is being “visited” at night by a strange man who can only be seen through videocam ( in this case, baby video monitors).

La Habitacion del nino is a good psychological movie with a few good scares and a smart use of video footage. The material never elevates itself to great standard but I still enjoyed it and at 70mn long, you never have time to feel bored.

My Rating: 6/10

Películas para no dormir: Para entrar a vivir Review

April 16, 2013 by Eric S. Leave a Comment

pelculas_para_no_dormir_para_entrar_a_vivir_movie posterYear: 2006

Director: Jaume Balagueró

Synopsis: A Young couple is forced to stay by a crazy old tenant, in an apartment they were just visiting.

My Short Review: Para Entrar a Vivir is part of the Spanish Anthology “Peliculas para no dormir” and directed by Jaume Balaguero before he went on to write and direct Rec and Rec 2. And it shows. The location (an old abandoned apartment building), the main character (a woman caught into a situation she does not control and/or understand fully), the scare tactics, many things feel like a rehearsal for Rec.

Unfortunately, it is not as good as the famed horror movies. The characters are really acting against any kind of logic (why not kill the crazy woman when they could) and  it makes you wonder how a healthy young couple could not put more of a fight against somebody almost twice their age!!

Despite those, the pace is good, it is after all a short movie ( less than 70mn, credits included) and the potential of Jaume Balaguero is fully apparent here. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to work a little scare before going to bed, without having too much time to spend on a full feature film.

My Rating: 5.5/10
