Mama Review

mama reviewYear: 2013

Director: Andrés Muschietti

Summary: (from IMDb) Annabel and Lucas are faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years…. but how alone were they?

My Short Review: I was intrigued at first by Mama. Another PG 13 movie that looked very creepy and seemed to have some nice eerie moments (Insidious or Dark Skies anyone?). And it turned out to be almost exactly as what I was expecting.

So no big surprises here in the way the movie follows a familiar script of possession/ghosts with kids and a couple (for once not really middle-class as they even have to fight to get custody of the kids as they might not be parent-material).

Actually Mama reminded me a lot of Asian Horror Movies such as Shutter, A Tale of Two Sisters or even Ring with a small dose of Insidious to make it more western. Mind you those are good references and Mama delivers some chills (albeit none original) and has in some scenes, especially the dream sequences, absolutely stunning visuals. The ending is well made and emotional as well.

So, as far as family horror goes I liked Dark Skies and Insidious better but with that said, Mama delivers the goods and gives you a good ride.

My Rating: 6/10
